Material abundance is a curse, and not respecting abundance is a bigger curse. Sounds bizarre? Read on, and you will understand what I mean by that statement.

Material Abundance Creates a Lack of Appreciation and Waste Generation

As a child, I remember very clearly that a good quality Cadbury Chocolate use to cost only 25 paise, and we were given this chocolate only once a month. We used to relish this chocolate and eagerly wait for the chocolate next month. We would eat that chocolate very carefully - piece by piece and enjoy it till the last bite. When we don’t have too much of a particular thing, we tend to value it a lot, don’t we?

My cousins used to travel a lot, especially to foreign countries, and they use to get chocolates worth thousands of rupees. They never valued it.

One of my patients is very wealthy. There are 5 members in the family, yet he would instruct his cook to prepare meals for at least 20 people. There are days when some of them may eat at home, and some may not even eat on that particular day, and that entire food for 15 to 18 people is wasted. He never realizes that he is wasting so much food and that there are millions of people all over the world who are starving without any food, and at the same time, there are many hungry children in his own neighborhood who go to sleep without food.

Does this seem right? Is it not a criminal waste?

I have a cousin who goes out for dinner and orders one full large pizza for a 5-year-old son. The son would just taste one piece, and his mother would order another pizza for herself but will not eat the pizza ordered for the son. And it simply goes waste!

Material Abundance Causes Degradation of the Self, Others, and the Earth

These examples show that we have no respect, planning, and saving for the next generation. We have no respect for Nature, who has given us plenty of things in abundance as a gift. When you have things in abundance without effort, your behavior changes. You become self-centered, you don’t respect others, you become arrogant, you humiliate others like dirt, you don’t value relationships, human life, the rules of life, and roles in society.

Instead of contributing positively to society, you produce more garbage – arrogantly, emotionally, intellectually, and physically.

There was an American millionaire who committed suicide. Can you guess why? Because he had only 500 million dollars left in his account. He thought that he had become poor and wasn’t sure if he would be able to live in poverty. And, so he committed suicide.

Abundance makes us lazy, less creative, idle, and we don’t value the positive moves, contributions, and good gestures of others. We grumble about our responsibilities and ask for our rights. We have no feelings or gratitude for others, and because of that, nature brings us disease at the mental, physical, and spiritual levels.

The people who have everything material in abundance, especially wealth, have no challenge and no satisfaction. Because of that, they get into depression very fast, and many of them even commit suicide.

When we get everything given to us on a platter, we never respect the Almighty and Nature for providing everything in abundance.

Abundance is a blessing to the wise; the use of riches in discretion lies; learn this, ye men of wealth - A heavy purse in a fool’s pocket is a heavy curse.

The Blessing of Positive Emotion Abundance

I have yet to find a person who has everything material in abundance - HAPPY! If you have love, happiness, and gratitude in abundance, then you are the happiest person on Earth.

Greed for material things is a curse, and abundance in positive emotions is a blessing. We are all blessed with Positivity.
