Okay so here is my vice - I wear makeup! I will not say I love make up, because I do not, my drawers are not full of makeup and I do not like hoarding various shades and types of makeup. I have one eyeliner, one mascara, one foundation, a few eye shadows and a couple of lip sticks. Since I deal with people on an everyday basis in my line of work, I find that I enjoy a well kept and elegant appearance. I am not saying one needs makeup for that look, but it definitely works for me.
I have worn makeup since my teens and over the past few years I have been successful at incorporating healthy foods, and less toxic and as natural as possible personal products and cleaning products into my life. One area which I have been unsuccessful in was make up. It was not that I did not try, but no local stores carried any healthier alternatives. It was even hard finding Burt’s Bees products in most stores. Anything I researched online was not worth it no matter how “naturally” they labelled themselves, as once I saw the ingredients, I was greatly dismayed.
Then it happened, a few weeks ago I came across a web site called Future Natural. I was skeptical at first, but then as I researched their products further I honestly could not believe that make up could be made with such natural, non-toxic ingredients. I was used to looking at my usual labels with grimaces at the numerous unpronounceable ingredients, all of which of course included the notorious parabens! Well here was Future Natural and they were different. The following is a line from Future Natural to quickly understand what they are all about:
In the search for more natural and healthy products for ourselves, one cannot forget hair care. A few months ago I noticed this on a store shelf and decided to try it, more for my husband then myself as I very rarely use conditioner. The front label caught my attention thanks to the colors and the fact that it was labeled “certified organic, naturally derived, pure vegan, and paraben free” - now assuming this is all true, does it get any better?
So what is it? Well it is a conditioner from a company called Live Clean. I checked them out and love what they stand for! They aspire to being green and earth friendly. They offer 3 lines of hair care. The “Green Earth” line has a shampoo and conditioner that is invigorating, the “Clean Air” line has a shampoo and conditioner that is volumizing and the “Fresh Water” line has a shampoo and conditioner that is moisturizing.
If you live in a place where there are cold winters or that has a dry climate, you are surely always on the lookout for a good, lasting hand moisturizer. Most lotions fail as they are alcohol based and hence always leave you needing more. Two products that are quite reliable for really dry, rough almost alligator-like skin are Glysomed and Herbacin Hand Creams.
Both are based on glycerin and advertise themselves as having a few natural ingredients. This past winter, I decided to try one of them and I decided on the Herbacin Brand Hand Cream as its list of ingredients was shorter by more than half, compared to the Glysomed.
Herbacin Hand cream uses natural glycerin and silicone but is surprisingly not overly greasy and it does absorb well. It moisturizes skin extremely well and has a long lasting effect despite the fact that it does contain two alcohols in its ingredients. I guess the addition of the glycerin and silicone overpowers them. The cream has a nice, gentle and barely noticeable scent.
