Salba: The History and The Present

Salba - Salvia hispanica L - a seed, a grain, a nutritious super food!

As I mentioned to you in last month’s review, during the month of September I will be featuring various Salba products on Evolving Wellness and giving you more information on this amazing super seed. Perhaps you have already read the review about the Salba Flats.

I am excited to share this little seed with you as I know many people today are still unaware of this little super seed and the potential that it has where their health is concerned.

However it was not always so that the world did not know Salba. This seed was once widely used by the Aztec population of South America and sustained this culture for hundreds of years.

Hence in today’s article, to begin, I want to share with you a little bit about the history of the Salba seed. Secondly, I would like to give you a general idea where Salba stands today by introducing the products they carry that contain the powerful seed Salvia hispanica L.

Review: Salba Life Flats

Looking for a healthy and nutritious treat as an alternate to chips or crackers? Salba Life Flats can be a great option.

Salba Life Flats come from Source Salba, the same company who first introduced the now famous, medically tested and nutrient rich Salba seed (Salvia hispanica L). Hence along side the original seed, they produce several other food items that are made using the Salba seed.

The flats come in 3 flavors:

Original, Jalapeno and Lime and Garlic

I tried the original and jalapeño and lime. The original do not have any specific taste, so if you are used to the heavily fat and salt drenched chips and crackers, you may find this type a little bland at first.  However, they are great on their own, but even more so, they can be complemented with any dip, at sides of salads, with soups or any other dish you enjoy a cracker with.

The jalapeño and lime have a very delicate lime flavor and a little spicy aftertaste. They can be used on their own or in combination with your favorite dip. My favorite way to eat either flavor is with hummus.

How is Your Diet Affecting Climate Change?

Currently the number of people choosing a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is steadily increasing on the planet.

The top two reasons people give for making this lifestyle/diet shift and why it is gaining popularity so quickly today are as follows:

1) Health benefits - we know too much today about the definite links between animal-products and diseases.

And

2) Being against animal cruelty - we know too much today about how inhumanely the animals are treated that later end up on our plates.

But did you know that an animal-product free or reduced diet can also have a huge benefit on the environment and help decrease climate change?

Well it’s true - and in fact it can have such a big impact that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently urged people to eat meat-free at least one day a week if they want to make a personal change to help tackle global climate change.

Review: Salba Whole Seed

In this review, I want to introduce you to the original Salba. It is a very tiny seed or grain from South America. Botanically Salba is a very specific species of Salvia hispanica L. and it is a very close relative to the famous Chia seed.

Salba however is different from Chia. Its main difference is that Salba has been produced through natural breeding techniques and grown into a nutritional super-food! Hence, some refer to it as the next generation of Chia.

Salba was brought forth through the work of Dr. Vladimir Vuksan, Professor of Endocrinology and Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Today, Salba is provided through Source Salba in Canada and Core Natu
