Review: Seventh Generation – Lemongrass & Clementine Zest Natural Dish Liquid

seventhdishsoap.JPG The Lemongrass & Clementine Zest Natural Dish Liquid Soap is just one of many natural household products that the famous Earth-friendly company Seventh Generation produces.

Seventh Generation says that it is “committed to becoming the world’s most trusted brand of authentic, safe, and environmentally-responsible products for a healthy home.” But how do these products really fare when it comes to the word “natural”?

Although many dish soaps today claim to be gentle and safe for your hands, they often aren’t and may not necessarily be when it comes to the environment as many are phosphate and petroleum based. Secondly, many people do not give much thought to the chemical residues left over on their dishes, which end up being consumed, if the dishes are not rinsed properly as is often done when doing the dishes quickly. Hence, it is important to find a health-safe and environmentally-safe dish liquid.

Misleading Health Advertising - The Culprit: Clorox

clorox.jpgOkay so a while back when Clorox introduced its Green Works line, initially I was very excited that finally a popular chemical company has come forth with something better where our health is concerned.

However, after doing some research and writing two articles on the topic, which you can read about here and here, I came to the conclusion that Clorox Green Works is nothing more than a typical greenwashing initiative.

As I said in the past, I applaud them for trying to improve but you cannot mislead people and give them a false sense of security while doing so.

Well, not to let you think that I am picking on Clorox again, but I just came across one of their online ads that would make me lose sleep if I did not write about it here. Okay, just kidding, but seriously I have seen ads like this from the SC Johnson & Company, Mr. Clean, Febreeze, Glade and now Clorox, just to name a few and I find them utterly disgusting. There is one in particular that I will be writing about soon.

But for now here is the Clorox commercial, check it out (only 30 seconds) and read on.

Maybe “natural” Means “toxic” Today - The Clorox Green Works Update

As I told you in the previous article I wrote “Clorox Green Works…Not So Green for Your Health“, I had a few unanswered questions as to the safety of the product when it comes to our health.  After posting that article, I wrote to Clorox Customer Service Department and after an email from them, which told me nothing, and another one from me and finally another one from them here is where the situation stands.

Don’t hold your breath…it isn’t too encouraging where your health is concerned.  What it is, is eye opening as to how these companies can get away with what they say!

Ok so to remind you, in my first email I had 2 questions for Clorox regarding their Green Works cleaners, which were:

  1. Why are the ingredients not on the bottle? And what are the ingredients?
  1. Why is it labeled with a caution label as an irritant, if it is all natural from plant based ingredients?

Clorox Green Works…Not So Green For Your Health!

green-works.jpgI recently saw a Clorox Green Works commercial on the television and it really caught my attention as I noticed many times before that the natural product companies do not advertise on TV.  We always seem to be bombarded by the same giant companies’ commercials over and over again, but not the environmental, natural or healthy ones (for obvious reasons I guess related to funding).  But anyhow here it was, this Green Works commercial spewing all these beautiful things about the environment and your health and working as good as any other cleaner.

At first I was pleasantly surprised to see this commercial on TV, and my first thought was finally natural products are being promoted.  Then came the end of the commercial and I found out that it was produced by the famous bleach company Clorox.  So next a twinge a suspicion came over me, but willing to give them the benefit of the doubt I figured they must see that the future lies in natural products and hence are coming around. We Will Not Live In The Dark: The Story of Personal Care Products in the 21st Century

In our very toxin-filled world today, it is important to get to know the products you use. Perhaps in the “good old days” we were able to trust the companies that made products for us, as actually looking out for us.  But did those days ever really exist? Or were we always just pawns to the product manufacturers? Maybe the only difference today is that we just know more and hence are tackling the ingredients of products which up to now only chemists were able to decipher.

It seems that almost on a monthly (if not weekly) basis we hear news of this or that being harmful to our health or our environment.  On an ongoing basis we hear scientists publish data finding out that something that we all thought was safe to use and have been using regularly is now linked to this or that health problem.

So what is happening here? Is it just another controversy to get our attention as consumers? Is it meant to shake us up and scare us to reach for new products, many times which are more expensive?  Or is it just one group’s retaliation on another in an ever so popular marketing frenzy?
