In recent years there has been a tremendous increase in the awareness and use of vitamins and minerals.
Although there have been many new discoveries on how our body metabolizes and deals with these micronutrients, we are far from knowing it all where these substances are concerned.
It is thus very important for all of us to stay as current as possible on what new discoveries are being made, where our health is concerned, as what may have been unnecessary in the past today is necessary or vice-versa.
In today’s tutorial let us cover one of the most talked about vitamins today - vitamin D.
At the end of May, Evolving Wellness featured a 5 part Sun Smart Series to maximize the benefits of the sun, while minimizing the risks.
One of the consumer’s biggest challenges I noted, was to actually find a sunscreen that would protect against the harmful radiation of the sun, while at the same time not increasing the risks of skin and other cancers due to the harmful chemicals in the sunscreen.
Finding safe alternatives was not that easy, that is until now!
The Environmental Working Group’s division Skin Deep has just updated and released their list of the safest and most effective sunscreens. They investigated over 1000 brand name sunscreens and the results are in. Their findings indicate that 4 out of 5 sunscreens contain chemicals that pose risks to our health. This is obviously not good news for a product that we are trusting to protect us.
And so I am delighted to share this list with you here!
Over the past few decades, cooking has been revolutionized by the power of non-stick cookware. All of a sudden, food no longer stuck to the sides of pots and pans and the job of cleaning pots, pans and other utensils in the kitchen was drastically cut down with the introduction of the famous product called Teflon from the DuPont Company.
The product was discovered in the 1930’s, patented in the 1940’s and began making marketing debuts in the 1950’s. By the 1970’s it was sold widely across the United States. However, it’s miraculous claims and economical success was somewhat short lived as in the 70’s and 80’s researchers at DuPont already started to find out that the chemical compounds of Teflon were not as safe as one would think.
Publicly of course, we did not get to know this information until other independent companies stepped in like the EPA. By the time the new century hit, most people had at least heard that the non-stick pan products were considered hazardous to our health.
I have recently come across a list that I thought would be a great idea to post and share with you here on Evolving Wellness.
The Harvard Medical School came out with a “10-Minute Consult: Healthy Travel“, which includes a list entitled “10 Health Items to Take With You on Vacation”. This list provides the information you need for a safe and healthy trip.
At first glance I thought - wow, what a great idea and probably very helpful as our summer and vacation season is upon us.
But after thoroughly reading the list, I shook my head as it became blatantly obvious that the pharmaceutical industry has a foothold in pretty much every aspect of our lives, including our vacation time.
So in this article, I will share with you the list, with some explanations of each so called “health item”. But beyond that, I want to share with you a new way of seeing this list and the world around you which is still so intent on treatment, instead of prevention.
