Review: The Green Beaver Company – Frosty Mint Natural Toothpaste

Green Beaver Mint ToothpasteGreen Beaver is a small, family owned Canadian Company. I found them about 2 years ago, while looking for a natural toothpaste. That is, a toothpaste with no SLS, fluoride or any chemical additives. You can learn more about the company and more of my thoughts about why I use their products here.

In my quest for natural toothpaste, indeed I found one which surpassed my expectations. Is it perfect? Perhaps not, depending on who is judging it and from what angle, but for me it offers everything I can be looking for in a toothpaste at this time.

Green Beaver offers 5 varieties of their natural toothpaste. In the past I did a review on two of them, the Zesty Orange and Cilantro Mint. The other 3 flavors include: Frosty Mint, Green Apple and Star Anise. I am not a fan of anise, so I will not be doing a review of that one, but today would like to share with you my thoughts on the Frosty Mint.

Even though I loved the zesty orange, and got used to the cilantro mint (when I used it), the frosty mint is by far my favorite and has become the regular daily toothpaste.

What is perhaps the most awesome about this toothpaste is that it should not at all make you miss your typical, commercial toothpaste. In terms of texture, color and consistency, it compares so well with chemical commercial toothpastes, even though it is all natural.

In terms of foaming ability, it is very good, but not overwhelming like commercial toothpastes. For someone using it for the first time, you may notice a huge difference in how much less it foams, but with time you get used to this as normal, where you are not suffocating on chemical foaming agents.

In terms of cleaning ability, with proper brushing strokes, this toothpaste is very effective at giving teeth and the entire mouth a clean feeling. As well, it contains beneficial ingredients for good oral health and the mint flavor is excellent – not too weak, not too strong.

This toothpaste contains NO fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, artificial flavors or dyes, chemical preservatives, parabens, chemical whiteners or animal products. It is safe for the whole family, including safe for kids if swallowed.

The ingredients of this toothpaste are excellent. By far the best I have found, where natural toothpaste is concerned. It is my top pick at this time for a healthy and effective toothpaste and I greatly recommend it.

I was wondering if you have noticed any changes to your teeth. Do you have more cavities, plaque or stain? I would love to try an all natural product because it would be easier than what I presently use, baking soda and hydrogene peroxcide. However, I am worried that in the long run they do not do enough to actually protect my teeth.

    Please advise.

      Hi Kristyn

I have been using the Green Beaver toothpaste exclusively for about 2 years now, and no I have not noticed any differences. I go for regular check ups every 6 months (for cleaning, etc) and no cavities or weakness.

I have read and heard from many sources, that the state of our teeth is not in the type of toothpaste we use, but in how we brush. So I use this, but know people who only use a toothbrush and water and have amazing teeth. Mind you they also eat an all natural diet (no processed food whatsoever).

As for stains, those normally come from tea, coffee, wine or pop, etc… I don’t drink any of those. However there was a period where I drank green tea regularly and the hygienist did say that she had to clean a little more. No stains or permanent problems, because aside from brushing technique, our oral health really does also depend heavily on our diet.

So in the end, what I am trying to say, is that in two years I have not seen my teeth get worse. I have also not seen them get any better, but that is not what I expect from this toothpaste. I normally do not have cavities these days, or stains or problem teeth in any way, but I credit my diet more with that rather than the toothpaste. I use this toothpaste because at the end of the day, we have to brush our teeth, and I refuse to put any of the chemical stuff in my mouth ever again.

As to the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, those are natural, and they may be okay short term, but they are too abrasive for your teeth to be used long term. Hydrogen peroxide is often undermined in its potency, but it is a powerful bleaching agent. And I have read some research that baking soda long term really wears down the natural enamel on the teeth. I know this and looked into it, because when I wanted to go natural, I thought I would just use straight baking soda, and was strongly advised against this. Like I said, it is not a problem short term, or here or there (let’s say you are stuck), but not good long term. So it is not that these won’t protect your teeth, because they are very powerful when it comes to living tissues, such as the inside of our mouths, but about the fact that they can actually cause some damage.

Now since you are interested in trying natural options, I also recently read about these natural toothpastes, called “tooth soap” – it definitely got my attention and I will be looking into it even more. The source is from NaturalNews.com and I trust its main author Mike Adams in what he states. This Green Beaver toothpaste has some silica in it (natural sand like material) and in his article he says that even that long term may not be the ideal way to go. I will have to research this further myself, but here is the link to the article and some other natural options:
      http://www.naturalnews.com/028289_Tooth_Soap_toothpaste.html

In the end, I cannot stress enough how protecting our teeth, is not about the type of toothpaste, but your diet and brushing technique. A diet high in processed food, sugar, coffee, etc, is going to leave a huge toll on your teeth regardless of what toothpaste you use. And it is not about getting a power toothbrush, but about proper and long enough brushing technique.

      Hope all that helps.

  2. I find the worst part about toothpaste is that most people have no clue that common brands are full of toxins! It really bothers me a lot that they put those toxins in things we put in our mouths!
Leaf (my wife) and I use this toothpaste most of the time. Works very well. Keeps our teeth white and clean and the mint is so refreshing. Great toothpaste!

      Hi Bud

Thanks for stating that Bud – it is so true. The average person puts stuff in their mouth that they have no idea what is in there. We just trust – but trust is a funny thing when the products are from people whose goal is to make money, and not take our health as the number one priority.

So yes, I too love this toothpaste and it is great to know that at least there are alternatives out there.
