Skin Deep: Cosmetic Safety Database

Share and Bookmark

creamIn researching for myself and you, I am always on the lookout for good, quality sites that are relavant in some way to our health.  One of these sites that I have just added to our resource page is the Skin Deep: Cosmetic Safety Database.

This database is extremely valuable to anyone out there who wants quick, credible and comprehensive information on any ingredient found on personal care labels.  The site is brought to you by the researchers at the Environmental Working Group, which is already listed as a trusted and valuable site in our resources section.  Their mission and vision is very similar to that of what Evolving Wellness stands for and that is “to use the power of information to protect human health and the environment.”

Skin Deep was launched in 2004 and is a non-profit, non-partisan organization. They have over 29, 000 products and over 7,000 ingredients listed in their database.  The rationale behind it is that as some of you may already know, the FDA does not require companies to test their own products for safety.  Hence, Skin Deep is researching for us.

It is by far the best and most comprehensive site when it comes to understanding your personal products quickly.  You can search by their categories: makeup, skin care, hair care, eye care, nail care, baby care, oral care and fragrance or search individual products or ingredients you are interested in!

I think such a resource is so valuable to our life because we do not want to have to wait to hear that a product is dangerous or banned on the news, where the info is often biased and comes too late.  Remember, I encourage every one of us to take our health into our own hands.  It is only through self accountability that one can truly be in charge of one’s health.  And thorugh a resource like this it puts the power and control back into the consumer’s hands.  We always have a choice as to the products we choose and with Skin Deep you can be more confident about your choices.

Well, enough from me, visit and navigate Skin Deep yourself, to see what a wonderful resource it is in today’s times for yourself and your family!

  1. If you haven’t heard of ONE Group (Organic Natural Enterprises) you may be surprised to see that they use only cold processed certified organic ingredients that are safe enough to eat. There are no unnecessary fillers like alcohol which only takes up space and makes products cheap.

We really need to get over the “cheap at all costs” mentality. If we can’t afford good and healthy ready-made products we can use things like honey, avocado, coconut oil, sugar scrubs, etc that cost very little and are very effective.

If you’d like to visit my site for ONE Group products, it’s http://www.goodskinforlife.com. I’ve not needed hand cream since using the hand soap and my scalp detoxified for a month when I started using the shampoo. It’s incredible how toxins from our hair products get imbedded in our scalp. YUCK!

@ SHARON – Hello Sharon and no I have not heard about this company yet, so thank you for letting me know about it.

I like your point about products being “cheap” – we really do not realize how much damage we are doing to our bodies and systems this way. If our mentality is to go cheap, we actually would be better off not using half the stuff we do. In fact minimizing personal care altogether is something I feel strongly about too. And out of those products that we really need like say soap and shampoo – get ones that are actually safe for us to use.

I am interested in what you mean when you said your scalp detoxified for a month? How did you know – what were the symptoms?

This is something fascinating indeed. Thank you.
