Hi Ken

Thank you for sharing this informative comment and your experience with other oral care, as well as ingredients. You bring up such great points as to being super vigilant as to what ingredients are present, even in natural formulations.

It was a pleasure to share this, as I too like to look into every ingredient for myself and help others make better decisions where truly natural products go. And even with the research I do, sometimes I feel like I am just scratching the surface as to how deep the rabbit whole really goes where all these cosmetic or synthetic ingredients go.

Wishing you a great continued journey into natural health :)

I found this very informative and helpful in finding a good natural toothpaste. My last bought with an 'organic' toothpaste was Trader Joe's All Natural - No Fluoride Toothpaste. I have been using it for 2 months and like how it cleans and feels. The added fennel is a nice touch too.

However, I noticed getting flushed face and pressure headaches, especially when brushing more frequently, just as if I ingested MSG, of which I am highly sensitive to. I re-checked the label and found that it contained sodium cocoyl glutamate (at best a dubious oleochemical).

While most natural cosmetic discussions and industry advocates give it a pass, I am doubtful that it is at all safe for consumption. It seems the manufacturer substituted one neurotoxin for an excitotoxin.

I used to get a lot of migraines and suffered a lengthly depression. Eliminating MSG, gluten and glutamates was part of getting well. I am more careful of what I put into my body and, now, even more suspicious of what manufacturers put in their product claims.

I will have a closer look at Green Beaver but the skeptic in me is not holding any breath and will stick to sodium bicarb, salt water and the occasional peroxide rinse.

Thanks again for the good information and hopefully, pointer to a better product.

Hi Marylyn,

Wow, those are great tips indeed Marylyn! And I love your point the most about less is often more! YES! In our society we slather ourselves with so many chemicals, thinking we need them all and they will somehow make us better. When the truth is, they are making us worse in most cases.

Thank you so much for sharing your tips and taking the time to leave this valuable comment!

All the info and comments are very helpful. I think people should also be aware that the skin/mucous membranes, our largest organ, do gradually (or quickly, in many cases) absorb substances with which they come into contact, and store unhealthy ones in the liver -- the same as if we had eaten them! And the mouth is not far from the brain, let alone the matter of contamination to one's bloodstream, ad infinitum. The liver has a big enough job already; so by the time all the results are in, it's a long road back to recovery. Dark patches on skin are sure testimony to the ravages of cumulative toxins; and while they may take years to appear, they also take YEARS to go away! I am definitely a case in point, therefore urge everyone to be aware of what is and is not PURE.

Less is often more -- more economical, too! Simple skin soap with honey tastes great as toothpaste and is so fast to use -- I set aside a small bar (can cut off part of one for this purpose), swipe it with my wet brush, and enjoy super-smooth and shiny teeth in a jiff! An easy and edible mouthwash, if desired, would be filtered water and/or aloe vera, vegetable glycerin and peppermint or spearmint oil; it will keep fine in a bottle, to be shaken before each use, and you can even choose a colored or decorative bottle or a spray bottle, if you like! It's best to use glass or #1 plastic, even if adding a spray nozzle.

'Hope these tips will be helpful.

Have also used tooth oil and made my own which is wonderful, if anyone wants to know ingredients for that. It does not foam, but leaves teeth very smooth and clean and bacteria-free, in short order; also, mouth is refreshed without a mouthwash! 'Just takes a few oils, which I keep in frig (or in a cool place) for future batches of tooth drops.

Wow just checking out the links feature on google, and stumbled upon this thread. I just wanted to say thanks for sharing my web site with other people. Just to clarify we do carry all the baby care products from Green Beaver, and I'll ensure that if it's not on the HTY web site I will update it ASAP. I'm a huge fan of Green Beaver their products are the best!!! I use the frosty mint tooth paste IMO it's the best out of the bunch. I also recommend using a tongue scraper after you brush. I also use the shampoo and conditioner I always use Lavender it smells so good. Anyways if you have any question throw us an e-mail, and we will help you out.

You know, I **love** the taste of this toothpaste! In fact, it's my downfall as I like to just put some in my mouth like a breath-mint when I'm not brushing my teeth, hence I go through a tube faster.

I also believe the warnings against swallowing are just to get around FDA regulations requiring very expensive testing to prove it is safe to swallow.

Hasn't killed me yet! Been doing it for 5-6 years now.

Hi EarthMother,

The web site where you can check out the safety of personal care stuff is SKIN DEEP COSMETIC DATABASE:
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

As for Green Beaver, I know they are still small (perhaps why they are so good...hopefully they never get bought out) and so not widely available but if you do not mind shipping charges of $12 to the US (or free shipping with a $149 or more order) then a wholesaler called HEALTH TO YOU carries I think all of their stuff except the baby line and they do ship to the States in about 2-5 days. I actually just put in an order for a whole bunch of things from Green Beaver last Friday and so am very excited to get a few new goodies that I will be talking about here in the New Year. Anyway here is the link, you can check it out and see if it suitable for you:
