Movie Review: A Delicate Balance

Last week I had the chance to view the latest ground breaking documentary entitled “A Delicate Balance.” This movie just came out this December and is beyond worth seeing.

A Delicate Balance is a film that invites us to look at ourselves, our health, what we eat and how we treat our Earth from a very conscious standpoint. For the past few decades we have been hearing about various disease rates climbing and climate change due to Global Warming getting worse and worse. This film is not about to tell you more of that.

This film is the loudest alarm bell that we have yet to hear to truly wake up and stop treating these incidences where our health and that of the Earth is concerned as some natural phenomenon of life. If you are a typical meat eater, expect this movie to disturb you as you see how closely our ill health is linked to animal products.

In terms of health documentaries, “A Delicate Balance” has topped my list as the all time best documentary where our diet, health and the state of the Earth is concerned. I am sure you can sense the urgency in my tone as I write this, but it comes from a deep passion of knowing within. Knowing that if we do not increase our consciousness and start making some serious lifestyle changes, we may not be building a pretty picture for our future where our existence and quality of life is concerned.

Thus today I share with you some highlights from “A Delicate Balance” and invite you to see a film that will not entertain you, but make you think perhaps harder and deeper than you ever have before about your health and that of the Earth.

The Background

A Delicate Balance is an Aaron Scheibner Film, who is an Australian movie producer and is narrated by Dr. Adriana Scheibner. This film took three years in the making and has more than 50 years of research behind it.

It features some of the most respected, world renowned and leading health experts such as:

  • Dr. T. Colin Campbell (of the China Study)

  • Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (internationally known surgeon, researcher and clinician)

  • Dr. Neal Bernard MD (author of many books including “Turn off the fat genes”)

  • Dr. Walter Willett from Harvard

  • Dr. John A. McDougall

  • Dr. Michael Greger

  • Maneka Gandhi (Minister of Environment in India)

The purpose and mission statement for this film is as follows:

Our aim is to raise awareness and help to educate people on how human, animal and planetary health are affected by the consumption of meat and dairy and industrial animal agriculture.

Beyond what the producer says, the motivation and purpose for this film is obvious. It does not sell a new diet. It does not sell an unrealistic solution to our health and environmental crisis. It is simply hoping to spread the message of love, compassion and wisdom where our health and environment is concerned. It is trying to inspire us to wake up out of a deep sleep that has lasted hundreds of years where man was taught to dominate nature at any will and cost he chose. It is such a deeply moving film because it forces us to face ourselves and the decisions we are each making on a daily basis.

The Content

This movie features interviews from some of the best health experts in the world today, who are well respected individuals and who do not conform to what the masses are doing and saying.

If you are familiar with the famous China Study, you will that much more appreciate this film as it brings to light all of the undeniable research where animal products and our health, as well as that of the Earth’s is concerned.

It is not some cheap ploy to promote vegetarianism or veganism. It is just a hard and raw look at how things are, how they got this way and what the consequences of that are for us and the Earth.

The movie brilliantly begins by discussing the origins of how our world became so protein and animal product obsessed. It then begins its slew of academic research behind the clear link between animal protein and most of the diseases we are seeing skyrocketing in today’s society.

If you are expecting to find this information on the news, don’t – as remember that our world revolves around money and the economy prevails above all else – including human health and justice. Hence cattle, pig, chicken and fish corporations, never even mind the pharmaceutical corporations, do not want this information becoming mainstream. What these beings do not understand is that life is not about “I can only have it this way or no way.” Life equals choices, choices at each and every moment to express the highest version of ourselves and contribute to the greater good of all.

The movie then touches upon all that and more where our health is concerned. It clears up how much protein we really need and the difference between plant and animal protein. It addresses all of the following problems and issues, including:

  • high cholesterol and cancer risk

  • current vitamin D level problems

  • healthy calcium levels and sources

  • the continuous rise of autoimmune diseases

  • multiple sclerosis factors

  • osteoporosis factors

  • iron levels and sources

  • the problem with fish today

  • breakdown of the diet for a healthy life

  • environmental impacts of our current diets

  • deforestation and its effects

  • methane production

  • water shortage

  • energy depletion

  • the state of the oceans

“We either behave as rational, intelligent human beings or we continue to suppress our intelligence.

The choice is in your shopping basket and in your head.”

Personal Commentary

I have to share with you that as I watched this movie, I was deeply moved, both as a human being and a health professional. The best part I think, was that the movie confirmed everything I have learned and put into practice over the past couple of years and have counselled people on. We all know thanks to our magnificent inner guidance system – our intuition, when something makes sense and when something doesn’t. For me this film and this message is beyond making sense, it is about waking up as quickly as we can, as our quality of life and survival is dependent on it.

In terms of my favorite part, I have to tell you the whole movie is my “favorite part.” However, if I had to choose one part that stood out for me above all else it was when the researchers and doctors talked about cancer. We all know that today cancer rates are a staggering 1 in 2.5 (on a male and female average in North America) and all dread this disease. We have charities, donations, campaigns all looking for or promising a cure, but we have overlooked one huge detail. We already have the cure.

“The Cure For Cancer is in What We Eat”

So many of us just accept it as normal that our bodies are these weak vessels that fall apart after about 40 years and are prone to all sorts of disease. But most of us do not step away from the darkness and into the light of consciousness to realize that these bodies were created by a magnificent source of pure love, light and consciousness. It would just seem really strange that God can build this amazing planet and all these amazing creatures and then these poor, weak human bodies that were somehow meant to live in some sort of physical suffering and deterioration. We as human beings are so ready and willing to accept that God “gave” us these bodies doomed to fail, but so not willing to accept our own roles in their deterioration.

If we lived in universal balance with ourselves and our Earth, for not a second do I believe that we would have even half the diseases or suffering we have today. The Earth, just as our body, is an intelligent system made to sustain itself given the right support, but we keep removing the support, throwing in stressors and then wondering where things keep going wrong.

I also greatly loved the powerful message the movie leaves its viewers with:

“Together we can save the Earth, but first we have to save ourselves.”

Conclusion

For me personally, as a person who tries to live out the highest version of myself at all times, there is just no better way to exist. That is – in balance with self, others and nature, which includes all of the animals, waters, land and sky.

I have removed almost all animal products from my diet, almost a year and a half ago and have honestly never felt better physically, mentally and emotionally. I am currently a step away from veganism and as soon as I find a natural way to get vitamin B12 (the way our ancestors did without needing animal products), I will be there.

I feel through this that I am not only contributing to my own healthy existence, but also to that of the Earth’s. I do not cringe at every animal that is abused and killed as I know that is not part of my creation or because of my choice. I do not cringe at every hungry face I see in the world, knowing that perhaps all those animals that would have to have been fed and slaughtered for me were not only saved but also their food was used to feed more people in the world. I do not cringe at every natural disaster, knowing that I am doing everything I can to heal the Earth.

Am I a dreamer? No. I am simply aware of what the power of one is, let alone the power of many. I know that unless we start small, we can never get anywhere big. I know that we need to be the change we want to see in the world.

For all of my dear readers who are not vegetarians or vegans or who have no interest in pursuing this path, please know that all of our choices are our own and the universal truth is that right and wrong are only and always a matter of personal perspective. Hence know that I would never judge you or those in the world who choose a different way than me – that would be counterproductive and I know that is not a trait of an unconditionally loving soul. In the end all that matters is that we are at peace with our choices and our inner spirit, and if the decisions you are making are making you feel that then you must be doing what is right for you.

No matter what your choice though, I still strongly recommend for anyone who has the chance, to see this movie as in order to do what is truly right for US, we need to educate ourselves on as much of the consequences that follow our actions as we can. Your health literally depends on it.

Wow, I feel like I’ve been living under a rock because I haven’t heard anything about this film until now. No media buzz in the U.S. about it. But, when you said Dr. Campbell of The China Study appears in it, I thought “Say no more. I’m definitely seeing this one!” I need to check out the website for details. Thanks for the heads up!

Life equals choices, choices at each and every moment to express the highest version of ourselves and contribute to the greater good of all. — Amen, Amen and Amen!!

  2. Hanlie says:

Brilliant and very eloquent review, Evita! I will definitely mention this on my blog.

I can’t wait to see this movie. I somehow doubt if it will ever grace our tv screens…

  3. Evita says:

@EARTHMOTHER – I know exactly how you feel because that is how I felt when I heard about it from a reader on our sister site Evolving Beings. I thought too where’s the buzz? But as I wrote here, I do not think many out there will want buzz around this one as it is pretty compelling where research against animal products is concerned.

The other thing too is, it is Australian based and just came out for viewing on December 7th – so perhaps not enough people are hearing about it yet. But I suspect that there will be big buzz around this once enough people find out.

The best part too is you can watch it for $4.95 as they are offering a streaming service of pay per view (PPV) on the home site.

@HANLIE – Thank you Hanlie! Absolutely, the more people hear about it, the better the choices we all make can be.

And yup…I would not be holding my breath for this one getting public TV support ;)

Thank you for this valuable information!
Looking forward to seeing this movie.

    • Evita Ochel says:

@ JUDY – You are welcome and I really have to say, it is fantastic! It allows people to get such a quick grasp of just how much our health is negatively impacted by animal products, all the while showing credible and significant scientific proof for it.

Take care and feel free to stop back with your thoughts on the film :)
