Coca-Cola: Maybe the Real Thing, But Definitely Not the Healthy Thing

Share and Bookmark

Today we dissect another hot topic for anyone who is serious about their health and for those who should know, but perhaps don’t, about one of the most popular products out there for over a century, and its serious effects on your health.

What is that product? None other than the soda drink, known as Coca-Cola or Coke.

Back in August, I wrote an article entitled “Do You Know What Is In Your Soft Drink ?” and dissected for you the average soft drink – all except colas that is. Colas, as I told you then , needed their own article for the sheer volume of information that I wanted to share with you about them – especially Coca-Cola, the original leader of the pack.

Hence today we are going to learn the brief history of Coca-Cola, what is in some of the different types of Coca-Cola out there and what effects do these ingredients have on your health.

By the way for those of you wondering why Coca-Cola and not Pepsi, well don’t worry. Pepsi is not off the hook in any way, I just figured we would go to the original source of this drink and by covering this one, I think we can easily see that Pepsi or any cola for that matter is in the same hot seat.

The History of Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola has been around now for more than 120 years! It was first invented back in 1885 and sold commercially in 1886 by a pharmacist named John Pemberton. It was intended as a patented medicine against headaches and tiredness.

When launched Coca Cola’s two key ingredients were cocaine (benzoylmethyl ecgonine) and caffeine. These are two known stimulants and today we know that sure these will wake you up and perhaps cure a headache, while they seriously damage other parts of your body in the process.

The premise for Coca-Cola, as with the other soft drinks I wrote to you about earlier, was also the belief that carbonated or mineral water had great health potential and healing properties that were widely known by the late 1800’s.

During the 1900’s Coca-Cola underwent many changes where advertising slogans, packaging, varieties and even its name was concerned.

Today, Coca-Cola is sold in over 200 countries in the world and is the leading soft drink producer!

The Original Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola got its name from two specific ingredients, the caffeine-containing cola nut and the coca leaf that it is enhanced with.

For years there were speculations as to whether or not Coca-Cola actually contained any cocaine in it. And yes, initially Coca-Cola had actual doses of cocaine as a by-product of the coca leaf, but by the early 1900’s, this was banned.

Today apparently, Coca-Cola uses instead of fresh leaves, “spent” leaves of coca - the leftovers of the cocaine-extraction process with cocaine trace levels left over at a molecular level. The company proclaims that it is thus using cocaine-free coca leaves.

The kola (cola) nuts are both a source of flavor and caffeine for the drink.   Apart from cola nuts, the special taste of Coca Cola has contributions from vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, and lemons, though the exact formula is kept strictly secret.

Hence here are the ingredients that are made public:

In the past Coca-Cola contained sodium benzoate, a chemical that has been linked to asthma like effects, hyperactivity, as well as it can damage DNA and holds the potential to become carcinogenic.  Coca-Cola is still phasing this chemical out in some parts of the world. For more information on this see the article “Coca-Cola to phase out controversial chemical” from Mail Online.

Due to the fact that the exact formulation of Coca-Cola is such a secret, the company only produces the “secret syrup”. This is then sold to franchise partners that make it into the famous drink by mixing it with the water and sugar and then carbonating it.

The classic coca-cola is said to have 160 calories per 355mL can (based on Canadian product), 42g of carbohydrates in the form of sugars and 40mg of sodium, as well as about 34 mg of caffeine.

Effects of Coca-Cola on Your Health

Okay, so let us start with a positive item – the only positive item and that is, that the original coca-cola seems like a health drink compared to its sister varieties that are infused with more chemicals then most science labs!

Honestly, I think this is one thing I will never, ever understand is how anyone who likes themselves and wants to live a generally speaking healthy life can EVER put those toxic fluids into their precious body.

I mean, yes the original coca-cola is far from being deemed anything close to the word “healthy” and with its whopping amounts of sugar, I see why anyone would want to avoid it like a plague – but to turn to chemically enhanced versions is beyond me. Technically, if one is using any of the diet coke products to avoid the sugar of the original drink, it is like substituting one health evil not just for another, but for a greater one.

Hence on a serious note, Coca-Cola has been under scrutiny for their health effects for a few decades now, so I am not telling you anything new.

However, before we get into the health effects, I just want to bring to your attention Coca-Cola’s latest advertising campaign. Have you seen what is their latest slogan?

“No added preservatives or artificial flavors since 1886″

If you ask me, that has got to be one of the most deceptive and misleading slogans I have ever seen.

For starters I am assuming they are talking about the original blend only, because their other varieties have numerous preservatives added to them and perhaps even the original one had the sodium benzoate added to it at one point.

Hence it is misleading because most people will think that coca-cola is referring to their entire line, which they cannot possibly be and secondly, if sodium benzoate was once added, I hope they are not assuming we are that dumb to think that it is somehow “natural”, like other deceptive companies have tried to do.

As for the artificial flavors, I won’t even go there. You mean to tell me that a product which will not disclose its full ingredients and has been criticized from various health angles is using all truly natural flavors – I don’t think so.

Thus the following list includes health problems that can and have many times arisen from drinking any of the various coca-cola products.

1. Weight Gain that contributes to:

- Heart complications
- Stress on organ function
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes Type 2
- Breathing difficulties
- Fatty liver and possible cirrhosis
- Various hormonal imbalances
- Depression
- Infertility
- Lowered immune function

2. Increased acidity levels in the body that contribute to:

- Heartburn/Indigestion
- Disruption of the acid/alkaline balance that is at the core of our optimal health
- Leaches minerals out of our bones; leading to osteoporosis and weak bones
- Eats away tooth enamel and increased cavities
- Leads to poor oral health such as tooth yellowing and bad breath
- Lowered immune function

3. Psychological disruptions that may consist of:

- Addictions and dependency due to the caffeine
- Irregular sleep patterns and problems falling asleep
- Mood Swings
- Depression
- Increased ADD/ADHD symptoms

4. Cardiovascular effects due to the caffeine that may lead to:

- Irregular Heartbeat
- Heart Strain
- Blood Vessel Constriction
- Increased blood pressure

5. Cancers due to the aspartame and possibly acesulfame-potassium

6. Nutrient absorbency problems and digestive upsets

To add to all this, never mind the quality of water they are using, the fact that in some countries the products are contaminated with cancer-causing pesticides, the aluminum cans or plastic bottles the product comes in or the fact that it stimulates thirst on a biological level and does nothing to quench it.

Please feel free to comment below if you think I have missed something or left anything out.

Conclusion

To conclude, I have to just point out one last thing to you. Even if the above ingredients or health problems do not bother you for whatever reason, just understand that optimal health is about putting in your body ONLY items that benefit the body and NONE that harm it.

As far as coca-cola goes, it has nothing to do with benefiting your body and everything to do with harming it. Hence, it is obvious that it does not belong in a person’s diet who is seeking optimal health, but I would go even further and state that it does not belong in the diet of a person who is even seeking average health.

Perhaps coca-cola has lasted the past 120 years, but personally I do not see it lasting throughout the next century. Today we simply know too much about health and are continually learning more. Today, major preventable conditions are almost one could say out of control. Today, we are living in a new era where people just don’t want to be lied to anymore – we have simply come too far to be amused with things that serve companies’ wallets and not our own health and well-being or the greater global good.

This is a great post about Coke. I’m very much against soft drinks and especially Coke. I know so many people who drink it and I’m always trying to explain to them why it’s bad for them, but it just doesn’t sink in for most people. Any information that is put out there to expose the true dangers of ingesting so many chemicals is good.

  2. earthmother says:

Can’t believe I used to drink this stuff once upon a time.

Best uses for Coca Cola now:

    1. pour some on the corroded terminals of your car battery and watch it dissolve the caked on white stuff.

    2. pour a can in the toilet bowl and let “the real thing” sit for an hour, then flush sparkly clean.

    True! http://www.howtocleananything.com

  3. Evita says:

@LOVELYN – Yes, I share the frustration – it is as I said mind boggling to me why anyone would want to drink this no matter how good it may taste to them, knowing what it is made of and what it is capable of doing to the body.

@EARTHMOTHER – You gave me a good chuckle… those are good uses…but since it is more expensive than baking soda…I’ll just stick with baking soda for cleaning :)

But on a serious and personal note, it is great that today you are not drinking it and most important way to look at it, the way I see it is that we continuously learn and grow and that is real success and progress and you can be so proud of that!!!!

  4. Kel says:

    Thanks for the great info!

My fiance has spent over $2000 in the last few years fixing the damage Coke has done to his teeth.

Not only shouldn’t adults be drinking it but it’s quite disturbing the amount of parents I have seen putting Coke into their toddlers bottles!

  5. Evita says:

    Hi Kel!

Wow that is quite a first hand experience with Coke your finace had and you offer GOLD advice for all people out there.

I really am not sure what to say about the whole thing of toddlers or even kids for that matter (never mind adults) drinking Coke. I mean it is not like it is a secret out there today that Coke is extremely bad for one’s health.

I guess some people just choose to ignore the facts. Perhaps others really underestimate them? For it is one thing to not care about yourself, and yet another to not care about this precious being you brought into the world and want to care and protect above all else.

Thank you so much for your input!

You are so very welcome. It brings me great joy to help people access important information about the products out there when it comes to our bodies and health.

  7. Linda Lauzon says:

I have had serious issues with stomach pain, constant watery stools and fatigue. Over the past 4 years I have had all the imaginable tests done and although I needed surgery for a few issues, I’m again (just a few months after my dr. gave me a clean bill of health), suffering from stomach pain, etc. I am underweight and have always blames my poor health with the fact that I am ‘fragile’.

My husband and kids have told me time and time again that it’s the 2litres of Coke that I drink, per day, every day (I drink nothing else, at all). Starting today, I have quit drinking it and will write back to you in a few weeks to tell you if any changes have been noticed with me.

  8. Evita says:

@ LINDA – Hello Linda and thank you for sharing your experience.

Based on what you wrote, although I cannot speculate for sure without further looking at your diet, based on what you described it is very likely that the large amounts of coca-cola are leading to your digestive disturbances. Here is why:

Coca cola is very corrosive, based on the amounts you were drinking it is likely that it has interfered with your natural stomach acidity, never mind your stomach lining which could be at risk as well.

Secondly coca cola has loads of sugar in it and is highly addictive. Based on your amounts, your body now treats this substance like a drug and I can only imagine the withdrawals you are going to face getting off of this. But stick with it and do not despair! You need to clean out and detox your system.

Thirdly coca-cola is highly acidic, now not from a direct point of view, but indirect in terms of what it breaks down into. Such breakdown products cause your bones to release A LOT of calcium and other minerals to neutralize these effects in your blood stream. So comes the weakness and fragility.

To add to all of this, you are probably severely depleted of valuable nutrients like minerals and are in serious need of alkalizing your body.

I am thrilled to hear that you have decided to give up this substance. Do tell us how it is going for you and how you feel afterward. I applaud your stance for giving it up, it is nothing but a poison to your body which your body wants none of.

And finally in terms of doctor’s giving you a clean bill of health – it all depends on what they tested. As long as your basic blood work is fine, they say all is well, but it is only on a deeper level that we find lots of things lurking within that are the precursors to future diseases. A great thing to do would also to be consider locating a naturopath in your area and having some detailed tests done where they can really analyze the state of your body and help you bring it back to balance, to avoid future health conditions.

  9. Linda Lauzon says:

    Hi Evita,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write to me! I’m 36 hours Coke free (I have never went more than 24 hours in the past 4 years and that’s because I had surgery). I usually get to bed at 11pm, yesterday, I was dead tired by the time it was 8h30pm. I went to bed but had a very restless night, but today was great. I feel so good about not putting that ‘crap’ into my system. I even ate more today than I have in years!
Again thank you. I will write again but I have this feeling that I spent thousands of dollars on doctors and years suffering which could have been avoided had I found your website.

  10. Chris Milkn says:

    Great looking website!

  11. Linda says:

Five months Coke free and I feel great! I still have some health issues which are obviously not related to my cola intake…or perhaps I’m still ‘healing’ from all of the coke that I drank but I’m nowhere in pain as much as I used to be.

It actually wasn’t as tough as I expected it to be. I haven’t had a drop of coke since the day that I quit and have been eating alot more. I gained 10 pounds and now weigh a near healthy 107 (I’m 5′4).

I now need to kick another habit…I replaced the Coke by Ginger Ale! I don’t drink near as much of it that I did coke though. I drink lots of water and juice now.

Thank you for your web site. You’ve done more for me than you can imagine, and certainly more than any of the dozens of dr’s that I saw.

    • Evita Ochel says:

      Hi Linda!

Oh how wonderful to hear from you and hear about your progress! I cannot tell you how happy I am for you – 5 months – wow! Congratulations!

Linda, your words and feedback went straight to my heart – thank you so much for what you expressed. I am just so happy that I was able to help in some way.

It is great that you are moving more and more away from all soda. Here is an idea to really kick up your health and get hooked on drinks that you never have to feel bad about drinking: If you have a blender, start making your own smoothies. They honestly are so quick and easy, taste great, will save you money and will continue to nourish your body with the essential nutrients it needs and once you start putting greens in them, even offer the very helpful alkalizing effect.

Making them in the morning and taking them with you in a big thermos or something to work if that is part of your routine works too. This way you know what you put into this substance you are consuming and can enjoy it too as they can be so delicious.

Start with something simple like blending some strawberries and bananas and crushed ice. Once you get comfortable add in more combos of fruits and slowly experiment with adding veggies, especially green leafy ones. There are some smoothie recipes on this site too, if that helps.

Anyhow, thank you for sharing how you have been doing – I can only imagine how much further and even better feeling you will be in the next 5 months with the motivation and pace you are at now :)
