Two thumbs up for this wonderful info!
I used to drink softdrinks in the past. But now I stop drinking them. My reasons are found here: http://skilledwriter08.pnn.com/7657-the-front-page.

If only people will opt for just plain water than these zero-nutrients cola drinks, they would become more healthy.

Keep up the good work!

Wow Monica - thanks for that addition! That is excellent information to know about.

Definitely gives a whole new meaning to the term "natural flavor".

Great post, Evita. Yes, pop is evil. It's also one of my guilty pleasures that I'm trying to break. I might have one a week, but man, knowing all this I'm going to stop myself before I plunk down that 50p and ask "would I really pay to have chemicals dumped into my body?" The answer is obvious.

On "natural flavorings", I checked it out on Wikipedia. Scary:

The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations describes a "natural flavorant" as: “the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or any other edible portions of a plant, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose primary function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional."

So "natural flavorings" aren't necessarily vegetarian or vegan. Gross.

i agree with Evita , its true that drinking soft drinking is just like drinking flavored chemicals and increasing your sugar level , we shud avoid drinking soft drinks due to its increasing level of caffeine , its better to go for a natural fruit juice/water rather den a soft drink :)

Alvaro is a popular new malt-based soft drink currently being test-marketed in Kenya by Diageo and East African Breweries Ltd (EABL) before going worldwide.
Alvaro is branding and marketing itself as "the non-alcoholic, natural alternative".
Natural??? Have a look at my post for more info: http://rafiki-kenya.blogspot.com/2008/07/alvaro-non-alcoholic-but-not-natural.html

Totally agree with you Evita. Soft drinks do not have any health benefits and I generally try and avoid them. However, I do occassionally treat myself to the odd can (once a week or less). Not good I know but I like to give myself little treats every so often - so long as my overall consumption is good.

P.S. Have you seen Coca Cola's latest "health drink" Diet Coke Plus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diet_Coke_Plus)? I think that unfortunately a lot of people will see this as a healthy alternative to water, fruit juice etc even though it is still full of the chemicals you mention.

I haven't drank a pop in 8 years. My body has told me not too. Now I know why!

Bodies are pretty smart if we can only listen to them.

It likes water a lot though.
