Top 10 Safest and Most Effective Sunscreens

At the end of May, Evolving Wellness featured a 5 part Sun Smart Series to maximize the benefits of the sun, while minimizing the risks.

One of the consumer’s biggest challenges I noted, was to actually find a sunscreen that would protect against the harmful radiation of the sun, while at the same time not increasing the risks of skin and other cancers due to the harmful chemicals in the sunscreen.

Finding safe alternatives was not that easy, that is until now!

The Environmental Working Group’s division Skin Deep has just updated and released their list of the safest and most effective sunscreens. They investigated over 1000 brand name sunscreens and the results are in. Their findings indicate that 4 out of 5 sunscreens contain chemicals that pose risks to our health. This is obviously not good news for a product that we are trusting to protect us.

And so I am delighted to share this list with you here!

  1. Keys Soap Solar Rx Therapeutic Sunblock, SPF 30
  2. Trukid Sunny Days Facestick Mineral Sunscreen UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum, SPF 30+
  3. California Baby Sunblock Stick No Fragrance, SPF 30+
  4. Badger Sunscreen, SPF 30
  5. Marie Veronique Skin Therapy Sun Serum
  6. Lavera Sunscreen Neutral, SPF 40
  7. Vanicream Sunscreen, SPF 35
  8. UV Natural Sunscreen, SPF 30+
  9. Sun Science Sport Formula, SPF 30
  10. Soleo Organics Sunscreen all natural Sunscreen, SPF 30+

Finally in case you are wondering, some of the worst offenders to avoid are leading brands like Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, Banana Boat, and Neutrogena.

So get out into the sun safely and have fun!

    Hi
This is great information. Thank you very much for sharing. =)

A little confused, how come the printable EWG’s list is so different from the Skin Deep list.
Also you say that Neutregena one of worst offenders, but is included in EWG’s as a shoppers guide goodie????

@ PETE – Hello Pete, thanks for the questions.

In terms of this list, the list that is presented here is the list that was up to date from SkinDeep as of last July 2008. They are currently preparing a 2009 version which I will be using when they have it ready.

If you look at the Skin Deep list I have and their current list, it varies somewhat, as they continually update their list because companies change or make new products, as well they may carry out more tests which may make the results more up to date, so that is why the difference exists between this article and Skin Deep’s current list.

However, as to your second question, that is a good one indeed about the Neutrogena. If you download the 2008 version of the EWG sheet, indeed Neutrogena is listed in the top 10, but only I presume that kind they feel okay with, as if you read below in the avoid section on the same sheet, they mention to avoid Neutrogena.

So there seems to be some discrepancy on their part. And why the Skin Deep list is so different from the EWG list, when technically they are the same parent company is beyond me. I can speculate that they tested them on a different basis, but that doesn’t make sense. My best answer to you to get the right answer is to email them and ask why the discrepancy exists between what they are telling people, as indeed it is a little dissappointing from a company who I trust to look out for our best interest, but my gut instinct tells me there must be some good explanation.

I will let you know here too, if I find out anything else myself from them.

Thanks again for the good eye – we need perceptive people like you today where our health and wellness is concerned :)
