Sorbitol is on the border of artificial and natural sweeteners. It is a sugar alcohol, and while it is nowhere near as bad as Sucralose or Aspartame, it has some of its own problems too. Personally, I would not ingest it in food, but I am okay in using this in toothpaste, as we don't normally ingest toothpaste. The worst problems with sugar alcohols are that they act as laxatives, and can cause intestinal inflammation with regular ingestion. It is however poorly absorbed by the body, so having it in the toothpaste won't do much, and even if it was swallowed the odd time by accident per se, it is not problematic like being cancerous or brain or liver damaging, like Aspartame or the other artificial sweeteners. Yes it is as I too found very hard to find toothpaste without SLS – I think I checked about 10 different packages of toothpaste at health food stores before I found this one.
