Review: The Green Beaver Company – Zesty Orange Natural Toothpaste

greenbeaverorange.JPG The Zesty Orange toothpaste is the second of the five flavors that The Green Beaver Company offers. And aside from the amazing taste of the zesty orange, it too, like the Cilantro Mint lives up to its reputation of a great natural personal product.

The taste of this toothpaste is delicious and I am sure it will be a big favorite with many kids. The toothpaste really tastes and smells like real oranges. So unless you do not find the orange flavor appealing, it is a great choice.  Other flavors offered from this company are: Cilantro Mint, Frosty Mint, Green Apple and Star Anise.

This toothpaste, like the previous Cilantro Mint that I tried, is the same when it comes to color, texture and foaming ability. The color of the toothpaste is off-white, not that typical bleached white toothpaste color. In terms of the texture, there is a little more of a grainier feel to it – naturally thanks to the silica.  Finally, it is very mildly foaming, also a difference compared to the heavy foaming commercial toothpastes.

With proper brushing strokes, this toothpaste also is very effective at giving teeth and the entire mouth a clean feeling.

The ingredients of this toothpaste are excellent, where natural toothpaste is concerned. They are truly the best I have seen so far amongst the so called “natural” toothpastes out there.

This toothpaste contains NO fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, artificial flavors or dyes, chemical preservatives, parabens, chemical whiteners or animal products. And thus alongside its delicious taste, it is safe to swallow in case of accidental swallowing and thus is perfect for kids! You might get them wanting to brush their teeth more than you would expect.

Excellent. Today I went out looking for a toothpaste that doesn’t contain SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate, the foaming agent in most toothpastes). There’s some evidence that SLS can lead to canker sores. I’ve been plagued with them since I was a kid so I thought I’d give SLS-free toothpaste a try. It’s surprisingly hard to find! Thanks for pointing this one out to me. Sounds tasty. =)

    Hi Monica

Yes it is as I too found very hard to find toothpaste without SLS – I think I checked about 10 different packages of toothpaste at health food stores before I found this one. Did not know about the canker sores…interesting and not surprising when it comes to SLS I am starting to find out that anything is possible.

I have just recently learned that the SLS in our shampoos may be what is leading to so many people complaining about poor hair health and split ends. Will research that soon :)

Looks like a great product. I bet my grandchildren would love it.

I would love it too if I had any teeth left.

    Just kidding.

  4. I use straight soap for the same reasons as you have mentioned here regarding regular toothpaste. No SLS
    or fluoride or bleach.

I am sure the Zesty Orange tastes much better. :D

I thought sorbitol was an artificial sweetener. Can you educate me here?
    Thanks

      Hi Cindy

      Great question.

Sorbitol is on the border of artificial and natural sweeteners. It is a sugar alcohol, and while it is nowhere near as bad as Sucralose or Aspartame, it has some of its own problems too.

Personally, I would not ingest it in food, but I am okay in using this in toothpaste, as we don’t normally ingest toothpaste. The worst problems with sugar alcohols are that they act as laxatives, and can cause intestinal inflammation with regular ingestion. It is however poorly absorbed by the body, so having it in the toothpaste won’t do much, and even if it was swallowed the odd time by accident per se, it is not problematic like being cancerous or brain or liver damaging, like Aspartame or the other artificial sweeteners.
