Hi James

Thank you for writing in. Unfortunately Marta has since moved onto other projects and is no longer able to reply.
And so to help you out, I am not a fitness expert, so I cannot comment too much on that end, but being a nutritional expert, I do know that often spasms or any kind of similar debilitating effects are diet related....specifically can mean deficiencies like that of magnesium. So making sure that your weight loss program includes a wholesome, natural NUTRIENT-DENSE diet is key!

From your body's point of view, making sure that you do ample stretching before you begin is important. Another point may be simply to allow yourself to do other activities until some more weight comes off, being gentle with your body until it adapts to the new requirements at which time it may naturally be ready to engage in the core exercises...or again by being easy with yourself, just start small...no matter how small and work your way slowly each day as your body guides you for what it is ready.

Hope this helps and all the best!

I'm extremely overweight (BMI 43) and have started a weightloss program through my HMO. I would like to start working on my abs, however it seems that due to the lack of strength in my core, I can't seem to do any level of exertion like crunches, pilates, yogawithout getting debilitating, relentless spasms. Is there a way to get past this so I can make some progress?

This was a great Q&A. A couple of things I like to do for my abs is jump rope and run. While you can't spot reduce, I've noticed that when I added these two exercises in my routine, It quickened my progress in that area.
