@ AMBER - Excellent questions!!! And I think what you just did here is inspire me to write a part 2 to this series, that looks at the myths behind getting sick and having a stronger immune system.

So give me about a week and I will do a thorough write-up on this topic.

But for now, I will quickly tell you that - you do not need to actually get sick to have a stronger immune system.

This is probably one of the biggest myths that we have been taught and I know so many parents who insist that "daycare is good because it allows their child to get sick and then they won't get sick later" - all I think of when I hear that is all those poor kids who have to suffer unnecessarily.

So if you are okay with it, I am going to use some of the statements and questions from your comment and explain them fully in an article like this one above that was inspired by a comment like yours from another reader - David.

So, what I'm gathering from this is our bodies as a whole don't work like our muscles do. If we damage them, we don't get any stronger.

But what about our immune systems? Like for example, I've heard, that the reason why older people (like middle aged) aren't as susceptible to the H1N1 virus is because when they were younger they had a flu that was a similar strain. Therefore, they still have antibodies to protect them from it, so their odds of getting it are decreased.

Now, if they never got this flu... wouldn't they still be as susceptible as everyone else? It's almost like the lesser of two evils is it not? I realize that if your body is working optimally then you shouldn't get sick at all. But your body's defenses are not always going to be at 100%... like what if... you were stuck in a room with like 10 people who were all sick, it was the dead of winter so your defenses were already weakened, and you forgot your lunch? (lol)

Essentially what I'm saying is, isn't getting sick every so often better than when you do finally get sick, your body isn't prepared and you get something really awful?

Is my logic completely off here?

Great info Evita! So many of us are led by blind faith when it comes to nutrition. We trust the food industry thinking why not, they are looking out for the greater good, right? Wrong! They are looking out for their wallets though. It's about time we stopped being sheep so to speak and finally stand up real nutrition.
